What is a Hatchback Vehicle?

2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback

If you’re in the market for a new car, saying you have a lot of options available to you is an understatement. Currently, there are ten basic types of cars that Brook Park drivers can choose from to upgrade their daily commute or accommodate their growing families. Of these various types of cars, hatchback vehicles are a new iteration based on the design of an SUV. Because of their similarities to smaller vehicles like coupes and sedans, many Cleveland drivers find themselves asking, “What’s a hatchback vehicle?” Follow along with Metro Toyota as we cover the differences between hatchbacks and sedans and the benefits of the additional cargo space provided in a hatchback model.

What is the Difference Between a Sedan and a Hatchback and a Coupe?

Hatchback and sedan vehicles have a lot of similarities, which can make them difficult to tell apart when you’re browsing online for a new Toyota model. In fact, many hatchbacks are named after sedans or coupes that are sold by a Parma dealership, such as the Toyota Corolla Hatchback. So, what is the difference between a sedan and a hatchback, or even a coupe? Here are a few tips that will help you determine which type of vehicle is best for your daily errands.

What is a sedan?

  • A sedan is a 4-door vehicle that has two rows of seating with a trunk that’s separated from the main cabin. Sedans are built to be comfortable, but compact vehicles. This makes them ideal for your Parma commute and for your weekly shopping trips, but they’re not built to accommodate a lot of cargo in the trunk or second row.

What is a coupe?

  • A coupe is a 2-door vehicle that’s often associated with luxury brands and stylish design. While coupes also offer two rows of seating, passengers will have to move the front seats to get to the back row. Coupes also have a trunk that’s separated from the main cabin. Coupes have less interior space than sedans since they’re built to be luxury sport cars, not haul cargo around Brunswick.

What is a hatchback?

  • A hatchback can come in a 2-door or 4-door configuration, and they provide two rows of seating. Hatchbacks look a lot like a sedan or coupe, but the hatchback has more available cargo room and the trunk is connected to the main cabin. The trunk door also opens to allow for more room to store cargo, and the trunk is accessible from the back row of seats. A hatchback is ideal if you need a vehicle that has a compact design but can hold a lot of cargo.

Hatchback Cargo Room

Hatchbacks are excellent vehicles if you need some extra cargo room for your home DIY projects or your daily Cleveland commute. The large, flip-up rear hatch door allows you to add or remove cargo more easily, plus these vehicles allow for larger pieces of cargo than a sedan or coupe can accommodate. Many hatchback models also come with privacy trays and/or screens so you can stow valuable items safely in your trunk and away from prying eyes. Like sedans and some coupe models, the 2nd-row seats in a hatchback can also fold down to accommodate oddly shaped cargo or if you need additional space.
